National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are nationally recognised qualifications which demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to perform a job, they are work related, competence based qualifications that enable employees to build and develop their skills to meet your business needs.
An NVQ is made up of two elements:
- Underpinning knowledge and skills - provided by practical training to fill knowledge gaps.
- Work-based assessment - job related tasks that develop the practical skills needed to fulfil a job role effectively.
NVQs are comprised of several units, made up of national occupational standards. The assessment of competence is carried out in the workplace on the tasks the employee performs. As the skills are assessed through work-based evidence, there are no 'end of unit' tests or exams. Certification is based purely on evidence of skills and knowledge.
